PAST.PRESENCE.FUTURE.

“The harmonies the pair have perfected in their acoustic shows get the big anthem treatment on “Wake Up,” and their twin lead guitar approach shines on the hooky “Almost Famous.” Every spin of “Past Presence and Future” leads to another surprise on a finely crafted record.”

- Vanessa Franko, Press Enterprise Audio Files (Aug 06, 2015)

"“The new Midnight Satellites CD, Past, Presence, Future marks the bands leap from being the best local band to becoming a legitimate independent artist worthy of a national tour, opening for an established act. Hopefully the band’s performance of the cd at the House of Blues was videotaped. It was the best live show I’ve seen in 5 years.”

- Chris Welton, Echo & Buzz (Sep 03, 2015)

“The music of Midnight Satellites plays to a wide audience because of their originality and versatility as a collective. Dual vocals and harmonic melodies are balanced by the well-oiled rock riffs that explode from the start of their latest venture, Past Presence Future.”

- Martin Santacruz Jr., LASF Magazine (Sep 07, 2015)

ALBUM REVIEWS

MIDNIGHT SATELLITES
PAST. PRESENCE. FUTURE

by Chris Whelton

The new Midnight Satellites CD, Past, Presence, Future marks the bands leap from being the best local band to becoming a legitimate independent artist worthy of a national tour, opening for an established act. Hopefully the band’s performance of the cd at the House of Blues was videotaped. It was the best live show I’ve seen in 5 years.

The single, Almost Famous, is a blueprint for a radio hit with a bouncy bass-line and raucous Queens Of The Stone Age guitars. Heart Feeling Dead has a surprising Johnny Lang vibe to it. On Long Lost the band returns to their metal influences and I was pleasantly reminded of Radiohead. Track #8, Get Low, is also fun pop punk that easily could have been penned by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In fact the entire cd is a testament to the band’s growth as songwriters and as a viable commercial project.

Individually each of the musicians have also grown up. Brennan’s Kilpatrick’s vocals add a great second voice to the band, and Sal Spinelli’s lead guitar is immaculate and spot on. Nick Seiwert is perfectly in time on drums. The album also features Jackie Bertone on percussion, and Lindsey Carter on backup vocals. I’m most impressed however, both live and on the cd, with bassist Ryan Kilpatrick. He’s explosive on stage carrying many of the songs, and his bow work on standup bass for the final track, Awaiting, is brilliant.

My only suggestions are, less is more when it comes to vocal effects, and I’d ask for one extended burn-the-house-down guitar solo. The band rocked the paint off the stage at the San Diego House of Blues CD release show. I’d like to hear that on the CD.

Past, Presence, Future is more than just another CD in the glovebox. It’s the Midnight Satellites ticket out of town.
